ALFA Foundation for Health and Education joins the "Sustainable Romania Coalition" program, coordinated by the Embassy of Sustainability in Romania (ASR)

The initiative confirms Group ALFA's commitment to sustainable development and the vision of a better future through progress in education and health

Bucharest, 10 October 2023 - The ALFA Foundation for Health and Education, founded by the Romanian entrepreneurial group Group ALFA, has become a member of the Sustainable Romania Coalition, the first platform for sustainable development established and coordinated by the Embassy of Sustainability in Romania, as part of the implementation and monitoring plan of the National Strategy for Sustainable Development. The Coalition now brings together more than 160 organisations and is officially recognised by the Romanian Government as a strategic partner and facilitator of dialogue on sustainability issues, through a collaboration agreement with the Department for Sustainable Development. ALFA Foundation thus joins the most representative community in Romania promoting sustainability and capacity building for the alignment with the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

On the basis of this membership, the ALFA Foundation aims to actively contribute to the Coalition's initiatives and projects, building on the experience it has gained in its first years of activity through the ALFA for Education and ALFA for Health programmes.

Mihai Măcelaru, member of the Board of Directors of ALFA Foundation for Health and Education, says: "It is an honour to join organisations in Romania that have made a firm commitment to a better future. Education and health are at the forefront of the United Nations' Global Sustainable Development Goals, and we are enthusiastically committed to this cause, firmly believing in the positive impact and scale of systemic change it will generate for generations to come."

Among the projects run by ALFA Foundation for Health and Education we mention:

  • Scholarships and ALFA Summer School - now in its second edition, the program supports 40 children from disadvantaged backgrounds in Alba, Călărași, Cluj, Neamț, Sălaj, Suceava and Bucharest counties, and is implemented by The Margareta of Romania Royal Foundation through the Special Fund for Children program;

  • The research scholarships "acad. Șerban Papacostea" (in the field of historical sciences and archaeology) and "acad. Nicole Cajal" (in the field of medical sciences), as well as the "Prof. Alexandru Avram" prize (for scientific excellence in the fields of historical sciences, archaeology and epigraphy), awarded in partnership with the Romanian Academy;
  • Encourage reading, give courage to the future initiative - Reading sessions offered by actress Monica Davidescu, inspired by the lives of people who wrote history, such as Nadia Comaneci, Barack Obama, Lionel Messi, Muhammad Ali and Coco Chanel, and books offered to secondary school students from Brasov, Bihor, Buzău, Teleorman, Ialomița and Călărași counties (a project developed in partnership with Litera Publishing House and citeste.ro platform);
  • Support for the launch of the book "Palliative care for all clinical specialties" by the Medical Sciences Section of the Romanian Academy. The volume coordinated by Dr. Cornelia Nitipir and Dr. Horia-Teodor Cotan aims to be a guide for physicians on how to approach the terminally ill patient, depending on the complexity of the diagnosis, offering suggestions on how to provide therapeutic support to the family.

Mihai Măcelaru adds: "The ALFA Foundation for Health and Education, although a relatively new entity in the philanthropic landscape, is distinguished by enthusiasm and remarkable dedication, with the conviction that even the smallest efforts can often represent significant steps towards progress. We express our deep gratitude to the partners with whom we share our vision and with whom we have initiated projects that are dear to us, and we are confident that our membership in the Sustainable Romania Coalition program will inspire and support us in amplifying our social impact through the development of new projects and partnerships."

In the coming period, the ALFA Foundation is channelling its resources towards sustainable initiatives in the vital sectors of education and health in the communities where ALFA Group is present through the activities of its companies. Through them, the ALFA Foundation remains firmly committed to its founding principle: to create and strengthen stronger, healthier communities for a future in which every member of society benefits from improved opportunities and living conditions, all with the aim of generating a positive and lasting impact in the communities it supports and develops.
